Kansas Was Once Home to an Ancient Inland Sea Filled With Giant Marine Predators
Millions of years ago, long before prairies and wheat fields, most of Kansas was underwater, part of a massive inland ocean called the Western Interior Seaway.
This sea was home to gigantic predators such as:
- Mosasaurus — a 40–60 foot marine reptile (essentially a real-life sea monster)
- Xiphactinus — a 15-foot, razor-toothed fish known for swallowing prey whole
- Plesiosaurs — long-necked marine reptiles that ruled the waters
Because of this, Kansas is one of the richest fossil sites in the world for marine dinosaurs and prehistoric sea life — even though it’s thousands of miles from any ocean today.
