  • Which Animal Comes First In The Chinese Zodiac Cycle?

    Did You Know!

One rarely known fact about West Virginia is that it became a state in the middle of the Civil War, making its creation one of the most unusual in American history. In 1861, Virginia voted to leave the Union and join the Confederacy, but many residents in the mountainous western counties opposed secession. Those counties began organizing a separate government that remained loyal to the United States.

After a complicated political and legal process, West Virginia was officially admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, becoming the 35th state. What makes this especially interesting is that West Virginia was formed by separating from an existing Confederate state while the Civil War was still being fought.

The decision was controversial at the time, and questions were raised about whether creating a new state from part of Virginia was constitutional. Despite those debates, West Virginia was admitted with the approval of the federal government and President Abraham Lincoln.

Today, West Virginia remains one of the few U.S. states whose very creation was directly shaped by the Civil War.

  • Which Actor Is Known For Voicing Both Miss Piggy And Yoda?

    Did You Know!

A rarely known fact about Kansas is that the geographic center of the contiguous United States is located near the small town of Lebanon, Kansas. This point was calculated after Arizona and New Mexico became states in 1912, completing the modern borders of the lower 48 states.

The actual geographic center sits in a rural area of north-central Kansas, surrounded by farmland rather than a major city or tourist attraction. A small stone monument and chapel were later built nearby to mark the location and give visitors a place to stop.

What makes this fact especially interesting is that many people assume the center of the country would be somewhere farther east or in a more famous Midwestern city. Instead, it is found in a quiet part of Kansas, reinforcing the state’s unusual position near the physical heart of the United States.

It is one of those little-known geographic facts that gives Kansas a unique place in American history and geography.
