A rarely known fact about Oregon is that it is home to what scientists consider the largest known living organism on Earth by area. Hidden beneath the ground in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest is a gigantic honey fungus called Armillaria ostoyae. Most of the organism exists underground as a vast network of fungal threads that spread through the soil and tree roots.

Researchers estimate that this single fungal organism covers more than 2,000 acres, making it far larger than any single animal or tree when measured by the area it occupies. Scientists also believe it may be thousands of years old.

What makes this fact especially surprising is that someone walking through the forest would probably never realize they were standing above one enormous living organism. Only small mushrooms may appear above ground, while the vast majority of the fungus remains completely hidden beneath the forest floor.
