A&W is the oldest fast food restaurant chain.

Founded in 1919, A&W started off as a root beer stand. After the tremendous success of the first root beer stand by Roy W. Allen, he partnered with his former employee Frank Wright to expand their root beer stand business and named their business A&W, using the first letter of their last names.

Some may argue that White Castle, founded in 1921, is the oldest fast food restaurant chain, since A&W started off as a root beer stand. To this date, this is still a debatable topic.
