According to Einstein's theory of relativity, time can slow down in regions with strong gravitational fields or when objects travel at extremely high speeds. This phenomenon, known as time dilation, has been experimentally confirmed and is critical for the function of the Global Positioning System (GPS). The time dilation effect must be taken into account because GPS satellites orbit at high speeds and experience weaker gravitational forces than on Earth's surface. If not corrected, it would cause inaccuracies in GPS positioning.
