Did You Know!

One interesting fact about the state of Oklahoma is that it has one of the highest numbers of Native American tribes and individuals in the United States. Historically known as Indian Territory, Oklahoma was designated as a resettlement area for Native American tribes forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in the 19th century, primarily as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Today, Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognized tribes, including the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek (Muscogee), and Seminole nations, among others. The rich cultural heritage of these tribes significantly influences the state's traditions, art, cuisine, and overall identity.
