Most people don’t realize that Vermont was once its own independent country.

From 1777 to 1791, Vermont existed as the Vermont Republic, complete with its own constitution, currency, and postal system—years before it became the 14th U.S. state. Even more surprising, Vermont’s constitution was one of the first in North America to abolish adult slavery and grant voting rights without property ownership requirements.

It’s one of the only U.S. states that spent over a decade functioning as a fully independent republic before joining the Union.
