One lesser-known event in American history is the Great Molasses Flood, which occurred on January 15, 1919, in Boston, Massachusetts. A large storage tank containing over 2 million gallons of molasses burst, sending a massive wave of molasses rushing through the streets at an estimated 35 miles per hour. The sticky tidal wave destroyed buildings, overturned vehicles, and tragically resulted in 21 deaths, with many more injured. The incident highlighted the importance of engineering and safety standards, leading to increased regulations in the construction and maintenance of industrial structures.
