Texas once had an official Navy — twice

Most people know Texas was once an independent nation (the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1845), but few realize it had its own Navy — not once, but twice. The first Texas Navy was established to defend against Mexico, and after it was disbanded, a second Navy was created in 1838 under President Mirabeau B. Lamar. This second fleet played a crucial role in keeping Texas independent until it joined the United States.
