Wisconsin Once Had a Real-Life “Ice Wars” Industry

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Wisconsin’s frozen lakes were so valuable that towns competed — sometimes fiercely — for the ice-harvesting business. Blocks of crystal-clear lake ice were cut in winter, stored in insulated icehouses, and shipped nationwide.

Wisconsin ice was considered premium quality, and some cities even accused each other of “ice poaching” by sneaking crews onto rival lakes at night.

At its peak, Wisconsin supplied ice to much of the Midwest before electric refrigeration took over — a forgotten slice of American history.
