π§ Vermont Was Once an Independent Country
Before becoming the 14th state in 1791, Vermont was its own independent nation β called the Vermont Republic β for 14 years (1777β1791).
During that time:
- It had its own constitution
- It issued its own currency
- It operated its own postal service
- It even minted Vermont copper coins
The republic was formed after settlers, led by figures like Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, resisted control from both New York and New Hampshire.
Even more interesting: Vermontβs 1777 constitution was one of the first in North America to ban adult slavery β a very progressive move for its time.
So technically, Vermont wasnβt just another colony that became a state β it was once a fully functioning independent republic before joining the United States.
