South Carolina Is Home to the World’s Rarest Shark Fossil Discovery

In 2014, paleontologists uncovered a fossilized megalodon nursery along the Cooper River near Charleston. The find included hundreds of ancient shark teeth, some from baby megalodons—suggesting the area was once a breeding ground for the largest shark to ever live. This makes South Carolina one of the only known places on Earth where evidence of a megalodon nursery has been found.
