Utah is home to the largest man-made excavation on Earth — the Bingham Canyon Mine near Salt Lake City.
This open-pit copper mine is so massive it can be seen from space and is over 4,000 feet deep and nearly 3 miles wide. It’s been in continuous operation since 1906 and has produced more copper than any other mine in history, along with significant amounts of gold, silver, and molybdenum.
Most people don’t realize that one of the greatest industrial feats ever built isn’t in a major world capital — it’s in Utah.
