🦀 Maryland Once Had a “Floating Forest” of Cypress Trees

Deep beneath parts of the Chesapeake Bay, scientists have discovered an ancient underwater forest—often called a “ghost forest.” These are preserved bald cypress trees that date back over 50,000 years, from a time when sea levels were much lower.

  • The trees were buried and preserved by shifting sediments
  • Storms and erosion have recently exposed them again
  • Some still have visible bark and structure, almost like time froze

It’s like a prehistoric forest hidden under water—right off the Maryland coast. Pretty wild to think there’s an ancient landscape sitting beneath one of America’s most famous bays.
