Oklahoma Once Had the World’s Only “Underground Capitol”

Here’s a surprising one: the Oklahoma State Capitol is the only capitol building in the world with an active oil well on its grounds—and at one point, oil drilling even took place directly beneath it.

In 1941, oil was discovered under the Capitol, and a well known as “Petunia No. 1” was drilled right on the property. The revenue helped fund state government operations for years.

Why it’s so unusual:

  • Lawmakers were literally working above an active oil operation
  • The well became one of the most productive in the area
  • It symbolized Oklahoma’s deep ties to the oil industry

Even today, Oklahoma remains one of the few places where government and energy production have intersected so directly—right beneath the seat of power.
