Oklahoma Once Had the World’s Only “Underground Capitol”

Here’s a surprising one: the Oklahoma State Capitol is the only capitol building in the world with an active oil well on its grounds—and at one point, oil drilling even took place directly beneath it.

In 1941, oil was discovered under the Capitol, and a well known as “Petunia No. 1” was drilled right on the property. The revenue helped fund state government operations for years.

Why it’s so unusual:
