New Mexico is the only U.S. state where Spanish has been spoken continuously longer than English. Spanish has been used in the region since the late 1500s—decades before English-speaking settlers arrived—and many families in northern New Mexico still speak a unique form of Spanish that preserves words and grammar no longer used in modern Spain.
