North Carolina Is Home to the Oldest Known Living Tree East of the Rocky Mountains
Most people know North Carolina for the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Outer Banks, but few realize it's home to one of the oldest living trees in eastern North America. A bald cypress tree located in the Black River Preserve has been scientifically dated to more than 2,600 years old, meaning it began growing centuries before the Roman Empire reached its peak.
Researchers discovered that several bald cypress trees in the preserve are over 2,000 years old, making the Black River one of the oldest known forests in the eastern United States. These ancient trees have survived hurricanes, floods, droughts, and centuries of environmental change, providing scientists with valuable climate records preserved in their growth rings.
This remarkable forest is considered one of North Carolina's hidden natural treasures and is far older than many of the state's most famous historic landmarks.
