Did You Know!

One significant fact about the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) is the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. On January 1, 1863, Lincoln signed the executive order, declaring that all slaves in the Confederate states "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." While the proclamation did not immediately free all slaves, as it only applied to Confederate-held territories, it marked a pivotal moment in the war. It shifted the focus of the conflict by making the abolition of slavery a central goal for the Union and changed the nature of the war from primarily preserving the Union to also promoting the end of slavery in the United States.
