⚓ Louisiana Has More Ghost Towns Than Any Other Southern State

Because of constant river shifts, hurricanes, and coastal erosion, Louisiana has dozens of lost or abandoned towns that literally disappeared beneath water or swamp.

One eerie example is Portlock, once a thriving 19th-century trading post, now completely swallowed by the Mississippi River. Some of these ghost towns can only be located by divers or sonar scans — a reminder of how living near Louisiana’s waterways has always been both a blessing and a gamble.
