Texas Once Had Its Own International Embassies
Before joining the United States in 1845, Texas was an independent nation known as the Republic of Texas. During its nine years as a sovereign country, Texas established diplomatic relations with several nations, including France, United Kingdom, and Netherlands.
What many people don't realize is that Texas maintained its own embassies and legations abroad, signed international treaties, and even issued its own currency. For nearly a decade, it functioned much like any other independent nation before voting to join the United States.
This makes Texas unique among U.S. states because it is one of the few that existed as a recognized independent republic before becoming part of the Union.
