🦞 Maine once had a law that made it illegal to feed lobsters to prisoners more than twice a week.

In the 1800s, lobster was so abundant and cheap along Maine’s coast that it was considered “poor man’s food.” Prisoners and servants complained about being fed too much lobster, calling it “sea bug slop.” The law was eventually repealed — and now, of course, Maine lobster is a luxury delicacy enjoyed around the world.
