While the Statue of Liberty is known for its iconic green hue, it wasn't always that color. When it was unveiled in 1886, the statue was a shiny copper color. Over time, exposure to the elements caused it to oxidize and develop the green patina that we see today. The green color is due to the formation of a layer of copper carbonate on the statue's surface.
