Nebraska Has One of the Only “Reverse Rivers” in the World
The Niobrara River in northern Nebraska is one of the few rivers on Earth that flows east-to-west in several segments, the opposite direction of nearly every major river in North America.
While most rivers flow west-to-east (toward the Mississippi) or north-to-south, sections of the Niobrara cut against the natural drainage pattern due to ancient geological shifts. This unusual flow direction is so rare that geologists classify it as a “reverse-flow anomaly” — making Nebraska home to one of the quirkiest pieces of river science on the planet.
