🦀 Delaware Was Once Home to One of the Largest Horseshoe Crab Gatherings on Earth

Here’s a rarely known — and fascinating — fact about Delaware:

Every spring, the shores of the Delaware Bay host one of the largest horseshoe crab spawning events in the world.

These ancient creatures — which have existed for over 450 million years (long before dinosaurs) — crawl onto Delaware’s beaches during full and new moons in May and June to lay millions of eggs.

👉 At peak spawning, hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs can blanket certain stretches of shoreline.

Even more remarkable? Their eggs fuel a critical stopover for migrating shorebirds traveling from South America to the Arctic. Without Delaware’s beaches, some bird species would struggle to complete their migration.
