While many American cities were founded by businessmen, land speculators, or explorers, Miami was founded thanks to Julia Tuttle, a wealthy citrus grower who convinced railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to extend his rail line south in the late 1800s. Her efforts earned her the title "Mother of Miami," making it the only major U.S. city founded by a woman.
