Georgia Once Had Three Governors at the Same Time

• In 1947, Georgia went through what’s called the “Three Governors Controversy.”
• After Governor Eugene Talmadge died before taking office, there was a bitter fight over who should replace him.
• At one point, three different men claimed to be the rightful governor:
  • Ellis Arnall (the outgoing governor),
  • Melvin Thompson (the lieutenant governor-elect), and
  • Herman Talmadge (Eugene’s son, chosen by the state legislature).
• The chaos got so bad that two men literally moved into the governor’s mansion at the same time, and the National Guard had to step in.
