🏴‍☠️ South Carolina Once Fought an Almost-War With the U.S. — Decades Before the Civil War

In 1832, South Carolina became the first state in U.S. history to declare a federal law “null and void” within its borders during what’s known as the Nullification Crisis. The state rejected federal tariffs it believed unfairly harmed Southern economies.

President Andrew Jackson responded by threatening to send federal troops, and Congress rushed to pass a compromise tariff to avoid bloodshed. The crisis ended without violence — but it laid the ideological groundwork for states’ rights arguments that would later erupt into the Civil War.
