Washington is the only state named after a U.S. president.
While it seems obvious, most people don’t realize that Washington is the only U.S. state named directly after a president — George Washington. The territory was originally going to be called “Columbia” (after the Columbia River), but Congress worried it would be confused with the District of Columbia. So in 1853, they chose “Washington Territory” instead, making it unique among all 50 states.
