After the Civil War and during the Land Runs, Oklahoma had over 50 all-Black towns, founded by freed slaves seeking independence and safety. Towns like Boley, Langston, and Taft thrived with Black-owned banks, newspapers, and schools—making Oklahoma a center of Black self-governance and entrepreneurship in the early 1900s.
