A rarely known fact about Nevada is that it is one of the most mountainous states in the entire country, with hundreds of separate mountain ranges stretching across its landscape. Many people think of Nevada mainly as desert because of Las Vegas and the vast open areas seen from major highways, but much of the state is made up of rugged mountain chains, high valleys, and elevated basins. In fact, Nevada has more named mountain ranges than any other U.S. state, and many of them are surprisingly remote. Some peaks rise above 10,000 feet, creating environments that are dramatically cooler and greener than the surrounding desert. This unusual geography helps explain why Nevada can have scorching desert temperatures in one area while snow remains on high mountain peaks not far away.
