New Hampshire has no official border with the state of Maine on land — the entire boundary between them is defined by a river, and most of it legally belongs to New Hampshire.

The border runs through the Piscataqua River, but under colonial-era rulings that still stand today, the boundary is the Maine shoreline itself, meaning the river — including much of its riverbed — is legally New Hampshire territory.

  • Jurisdiction disputes have gone all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court
