Rarely known Florida fact: Long before Florida became famous for oranges, beaches, and theme parks, it became home to what is widely recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental United States. St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565, more than 40 years before the English established Jamestown in Virginia in 1607 and more than 50 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth in 1620. Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés established the settlement, which later became an important military outpost. Today, St. Augustine still contains reminders of its centuries-old Spanish heritage, including historic streets and the massive Castillo de San Marcos, making Florida's European colonial history considerably older than many Americans realize.
