🌋 Arizona once had a volcano that erupted less than 1,000 years ago

Most people think of Arizona as pure desert—but it’s actually home to one of the youngest volcanoes in the continental U.S.

The Sunset Crater Volcano, near Flagstaff, erupted around the year 1085. The explosion was so powerful it scattered ash over hundreds of miles and forced local Native American tribes to relocate entire villages. The land around it is still covered in jagged black lava rock—proof that Arizona’s past wasn’t just hot, it was explosive.
