North Carolina Once Had a “Lost Colony” That Vanished Without a Trace
One of the most mysterious events in early American history happened in North Carolina—the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony.
In 1587, over 100 English settlers established a colony on Roanoke Island. When their governor returned from a supply trip to England three years later, the entire settlement had vanished—no bodies, no signs of struggle, just one eerie clue carved into a tree:
“CROATOAN.”
To this day, historians still debate what happened. Some believe the settlers assimilated with local Native American tribes, while others suspect disease, starvation, or even relocation. But no definitive proof has ever been found.
👉 It remains one of the oldest unsolved mysteries in American history, right in North Carolina’s backyard.
