🏔️ Durango Was Once Home to a Secret Uranium Mill

In the mid-20th century, Durango quietly played a role in the Manhattan Project and the early Cold War nuclear arms race. The Durango Uranium Mill, just outside town, processed uranium ore for atomic weapons.

What’s wild? For decades, residents had no idea the site was contributing to nuclear material production. It wasn’t until the 1980s that a major cleanup operation was launched due to contamination concerns. Today, the old site is a reclaimed public park — but its atomic history remains mostly unknown.
