Rarely Known Delaware Fact: Delaware Once Had a Town That Was Accidentally in Two States

The town of Delmar sits directly on the border between Delaware and Maryland. Its name literally comes from combining "Del" (Delaware) and "Mar" (Maryland). What's unusual is that the state line runs right through the community, meaning some residents live in Delaware while their neighbors across the street live in Maryland.

For many years, people in Delmar crossed a state line simply by walking down the street, creating unique situations involving schools, taxes, voting, and local services. While border towns exist elsewhere in America, Delmar is one of the few communities whose very name celebrates the fact that it belongs to two states at once.

This odd geographic quirk has made Delmar one of the most distinctive small towns in the Mid-Atlantic region and a fascinating piece of Delaware history that many Americans have never heard of.
