Did You Know!

Many people know Wyoming as the least-populated U.S. state, but few realize it was the first place in the modern world to grant women the right to vote. In 1869, the Wyoming Territory passed a law giving women full voting rights—more than 50 years before the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

When Wyoming sought statehood in 1890, Congress pressured the territory to revoke women's voting rights. Wyoming refused, reportedly stating it would remain out of the Union rather than enter without women's suffrage. As a result, Wyoming became known as "The Equality State."
