Rare Texas Fact: Texas Has an Official State Longhorn Herd

One surprisingly little-known fact about Texas is that the state maintains an official herd of Texas Longhorn cattle as a living reminder of its ranching history.

The Texas Longhorn is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Lone Star State, but the breed was once in danger of disappearing. Longhorns were exceptionally well suited to the harsh conditions of the American Southwest, and after the Civil War, enormous herds were driven from Texas to northern markets along famous cattle trails.

As ranching changed, however, cattle producers increasingly favored other breeds, and the traditional Longhorn became far less common. Preservation efforts eventually helped keep the historic breed from fading away.

In 1969, Texas established its official State of Texas Longhorn Herd. The herd became associated with Fort Griffin, an important frontier location that once sat near some of the great cattle-driving routes of the 19th century.

Today, the animals represent much more than an instantly recognizable pair of horns. They serve as a living connection to the cowboys, cattle drives, frontier settlements, and ranching traditions that played a major role in shaping Texas.

So while millions of people recognize the Texas Longhorn, relatively few realize that Texas actually maintains an official state herd dedicated to preserving this piece of Lone Star history.

New Mexico has something no other U.S. state is known to have—an official state question: “Red or green?”

The question refers to one of the most important traditions in New Mexican cuisine: choosing between red chile and green chile when ordering food. In 1999, the New Mexico Legislature officially adopted “Red or green?” as the state question, recognizing just how deeply chile is woven into the state’s history and culture.

There’s even a third answer that visitors may not know. If you want both red and green chile on the same dish, you can simply order it “Christmas,” referring to the traditional red and green colors of the holiday.

Choosing a football shirt involves more than appearance because fit and intended use also matter. For fans comparing modern and retro styles, retro Juventus jersey(camiseta retro de la Juventus) keeps the focus on the selected identity. The intended use can help determine whether a relaxed or close-fitting version is more suitable.

The tradition goes far beyond restaurant menus. New Mexico is famous for its distinctive chile varieties, particularly those grown around the Hatch Valley. Chile cultivation in the region has a history stretching back centuries, and the crop has become an important part of New Mexico’s agricultural and culinary identity.

So if you’re visiting New Mexico and a server suddenly asks, “Red or green?”, they’re not asking about your favorite color—they’re asking you to participate in one of the state’s most recognizable traditions.
