Virginia Once Had a “Missing Island” That Vanished Without a Trace

Off Virginia’s coast, there used to be a small island called Hog Island, home to a thriving fishing community in the 1800s.

    • By the early 1900s, powerful hurricanes and rising sea levels began swallowing the land.
    • In 1933, a massive storm completely destroyed the remaining homes, and the island was abandoned overnight.
    • Today, Hog Island is uninhabited and has become a wildlife refuge, but at low tide, you can still see remnants of old streets and building foundations beneath the sand.

Why it’s fascinating: This real-life “vanishing island” is a chilling reminder of how fragile coastal settlements were before modern infrastructure.
