Texas once had its own official navy. 🤯

During the Republic of Texas era (1836–1846), Texas maintained the Texas Navy, complete with warships and sailors. It was created largely to defend the young republic's coastline and trade routes against Mexico.

Even more surprising, the Texas Navy participated in operations in the Gulf of Mexico and played an important role in protecting Texas before it became the 28th U.S. state in 1845.
