The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War. It declared that all slaves in Confederate-held territory were to be set free. While it didn’t immediately free all slaves, as it only applied to areas under Confederate control, it marked a significant step towards the abolition of slavery in the United States.
