A Rarely Known Medical Fact About Maryland

Most people know Maryland for its Chesapeake Bay and historic cities — but few realize it was once home to one of the most controversial medical experiments in American history.

In the 1960s and 1970s, scientists conducted government-funded radiation experiments at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Patients undergoing cancer treatment were unknowingly given additional radiation exposure to study its effects on the human body.

At the time, informed consent standards were far looser than they are today. Decades later, the experiments became part of a broader federal investigation into Cold War-era medical research practices. The revelations helped reshape modern ethical guidelines, leading to much stricter oversight in human clinical trials.

Today, Maryland is also home to some of the nation’s most advanced biomedical research institutions — showing how far medical ethics and patient protections have evolved since that era.
