Chicago Reversed the Flow of Its River — Literally

In 1900, Chicago engineers reversed the direction of the Chicago River, an engineering feat so bold it shocked the world.

• Originally, the river flowed into Lake Michigan, which was also the city’s main source of drinking water.
• This caused massive outbreaks of typhoid and cholera, as sewage and industrial waste contaminated the lake.
• To solve the crisis, engineers built a system of canals and locks to make the river flow backward, sending pollution away from Lake Michigan and toward the Mississippi River.

This project was so groundbreaking that it’s still considered one of the most ambitious public health engineering feats in U.S. history, and it helped shape Chicago into the powerhouse city it is today.
