Did You Know!
Arkansas is home to the only public diamond mine in the world where anyone can keep what they find.
At Crater of Diamonds State Park, visitors can dig through a 37-acre volcanic field that contains real diamonds. What makes it unique is the park’s rule: “finders keepers.”
That means if you discover a diamond, it legally belongs to you.
Since the site became a state park in 1972, visitors have uncovered over 35,000 diamonds. Some of them have been quite valuable.
One of the most famous finds happened in 2015 when a visitor discovered an 8.52-carat diamond, later named the Esperanza Diamond. Even more surprising, many diamonds there are found simply lying on the surface after rainstorms, when soil erosion exposes them.
Because the volcanic soil continuously erodes and shifts, new diamonds are regularly brought to the surface, which is why people still find them decades later.
Today, thousands of visitors travel to Arkansas each year hoping to strike it lucky — proving that in this state, a family day at the park could literally turn into a treasure hunt. 💎
