Georgia Once Had Two Official State Capitals at the Same Time
In 1868, during Reconstruction, Georgia’s government split so dramatically that two different cities claimed to be the legitimate capital:
- Milledgeville, where traditional state leaders refused to relocate
- Atlanta, where the newly recognized Reconstruction government operated under federal authority
For a brief period, Georgia effectively had two competing state governments, each insisting they were the lawful seat of power.
It wasn’t fully resolved until later that year, when the federal government ultimately recognized Atlanta — a decision that paved the way for Atlanta becoming the permanent state capital.
