Virginia once included territory that eventually became all or part of several other states.

In its colonial and early-statehood history, Virginia claimed an enormous amount of territory extending westward. Lands associated with those early claims eventually became areas within states including West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

One particularly interesting chapter came in 1792, when Kentucky separated from Virginia and became the 15th U.S. state.
