Georgia Is Home to the World’s Largest Exposed Granite Dome

Just outside Atlanta sits Stone Mountain — the largest exposed granite dome in the world.

Most people know it for its massive carving, but few realize the geological scale of the mountain itself:

• It rises 825 feet above the surrounding land
• The exposed rock covers over 5 square miles underground
• It formed more than 300 million years ago
• It’s actually a giant mass of granite (called a “monadnock”) that was once buried deep beneath the Earth’s surface

What makes it rare isn’t just the size — it’s that this much solid granite is exposed in one continuous formation. Most granite formations are partially covered by soil or vegetation.
