In the tiny town of Tonopah, near the mysterious Area 51 region, there’s a local legend that echoes a real policy once enforced in Nevada: in Bodie, California (on the Nevada border), and briefly discussed for Nevada ghost towns, dying within city limits was discouraged — and in some cases, officially illegal — because there was no cemetery space and the harsh desert made burials nearly impossible.
While the law is no longer actively enforced, this strange history reflects Nevada’s wild mining boom days, when towns would spring up overnight, grow to thousands of residents, and then vanish just as quickly, leaving behind eerie ghost towns scattered across the desert.
Why it’s interesting: Nevada still has over 600 ghost towns, more than actual living towns, making it one of the most mysterious states in the U.S.
