Long before the Rockies ever rose, the Appalachian Mountains — stretching through western North Carolina — were already ancient giants.

Geologists estimate they’re over 480 million years old, making them some of the oldest mountains on Earth.

At one point, they were taller than the Himalayas, but hundreds of millions of years of erosion have worn them down into the rolling blue ridges we see today.
