Indiana is Home to the Only U.S. City That Went Bankrupt Due to a Canal Obsession

In the 1830s, Indiana invested heavily in a massive internal improvements plan—including the Wabash and Erie Canal, intended to connect the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. The state borrowed so much money that by 1841, it defaulted on its debts, and the city of Huntington went bankrupt, one of the few municipalities in U.S. history to do so purely over canal projects. The obsession with canals nearly ruined Indiana's economy before railroads took over.
